As much as I talk about wanting to be a librarian, I've been really out of the loop with books lately. As I was at Wally World today (getting my crack for the week, also known as Diet Dr. Pepper) I decided to browse the book section to see if there was anything good. Usually I leave sans books because the book shelves are bursting with trashy romance novels and inspirationals.
Today, however, I did the novice error: I picked up a book just because of it's cover, and because it was compact and proportionate. (I'm Goldilocks about books. If I am going to purchase one, the pages have to have a certain texture, the print not too big or too small, the shape not too oddly rectangle or square. I've had no official diagnosis on my book disorder, because I'm completely content with being a weirdo) I'm so glad that I did. I walked out with The Last Lecture.
As I found out after reading the book, it's been a bestseller for awhile. I guess I'm just not caught up on the New York Times or the news for that matter.
The book is not phenomenally written or lengthy. (in fact, I finished it in one short afternoon) But it was inspiring, thought-provoking, and one that I'm sure I'll read many times.
It makes me want to get off of my ass and start doing what I say I want to do. It's so cliche, but so true: life is too freaking short.
If you have the time, please read this book. This man is inspirational and motivational. It was just what I needed to get me out of this funk I've been in lately.
By the way: it is the perfect size, the paper is sturdy and nicely textured, and it's a compact little square that looks great with the cover or without. Just in case any of you are as obsessive compulsive about books as I am.

Ha! I just read it last week, and I completely agree with your review! If you get a chance, you should watch the lecture; the whole thing is available online.
I definitely judge books by their covers, which is why its a good thing I so rarely see them until after I've already ordered the book. :-D
I'll have to check this book out.
Oh and I tagged you in a survey. However, do not feel obligated to do it. :)
I've been meaning to read this too. I saw an old interview with the author a couple of months back. Truly inspiring.
