I was just telling Loqui today that I am very tempted to give up on this whole MLS thing, simply for the fact that I'm scared shitless to take the GRE.
Although I've had the prep books for almost a month, I didn't start the practice tests until yesterday. I am a complete moron. Perhaps it would have been a little easier right out of college, but it's been four years. I haven't had a regular math class since my freshman year of college, eight years ago! Nothing like taking a practice test and realizing that you don't even remember how to find the area of a trapezoid or how to add fractions. Yup, it's that bad folks.
I was so desperate that I emailed an advisor at the college I've been eyeing to make sure that it is absolutely necessary to take the GRE. I even buttered it up with "do you make exceptions for high G.P.A.s? Because I'm super, duper, uber smart." or something like that. Her reply was, "I suggest you buy some prep books and start studying." or something like that. So, no luck there. My almost perfect college GPA won't get me in.
I'm going to have to actually study. What's worse, is I'm really, really afraid I won't pass.
And here's a confession for you: I've never failed a test in my life. NEVER. Not one. Not even the PRAXIS II test for Special Education that I took in 2006. I had no background or classes in Special Ed during college but miraculously I passed the test (written and multiple choice) on the first try. (That's how backwards NC is. I'm now "highly qualified" to teach special education just because of that test)
So I'm terrified about this test. Has anyone taken it that can offer me any suggestions? Do you know that there are TWO writing sections? I suck under pressure like that.
But I've got to stop trying to talk myself out of getting my Masters just because of this damn test. I've got to just suck it up and do it. And prepare myself for failure the first couple of times. Even if it does cost $140 each time.

5 thought(s) about it:
You can do it! And it IS worth it!!! Seriously, it is. I don't know where you are applying, but seriously, unless your scores are truly abysmal (and I know they won't be, you are intelligent and you can write just fine!) you are going to get in, esp. if you have a good undergrad GPA.
I didn't use the GRE for my MLS, but I did study for it and for the LSAT (long story). My best recommendation is to set aside a little time each day. Also, schedule the test so you have a date to work towards...and don't let it get you down. YOU CAN DO IT!
Hi Brando
You have a good blog.

Be happy.
I hear you! I too am terrified about taking the GRE. Math scares me the most, that's always been my worst subject and I avoided it like the plague in college. I know you can do this! Once you do you can give me all kinds of good tips. :)
Awwwwww - I'm sorry this GRE thing has you so down. But this is *exactly* why you are spending time getting prepped. I guarantee that once you look up those math things once, you will remember them for future practice tests.
I know you've got it in you if you have that stellar GPA from undergrad. And I'm so glad that NL jumped in with encouragement that it's going to be worth it. Just focus on the end goal, and do your best.
*hugs*
One more piece of encouragement; I would be willing to bet that the math section doesn't matter nearly as much as the rest. So if you do so-so at the math but do great at the language stuff, you'll probably be a-ok.
