Goodbye Sledge?

After two days of being trapped in my house, I finally have a rental car. After driving in my big SUV for almost a year, it feel so weird to drive in a regular sedan and feel so low to the ground.

And now I'm super paranoid to drive. I over analyzed every turn, every signal, every merge that I made on my trip home today. Especially after I denied the extra $11 a day charge for extra insurance. Yes, that will be my luck folks. Deny the insurance and just wait for something bad to happen in the rental car. Crossing my fingers that I will be able to return it just as good as new.

So now I just hurry up and wait to find out what's going to happen with my car. I don't think the insurance claim rep who spoke to me today was very happy after I told him how the accident happen. He ended our conversation by saying, "So, this is obviously our fault (meaning MINE) so we are going to have to pay for both vehicles." Oops. Yes, I realize it's my fault. I'm sorry, really I am. Do you think I wanted to crash my brand new car?

Also, it's not looking too good for the future of my Sledge. (that's the name hubby coined for my silver Edge). I flat out asked the insurance guy if my car was going to be totaled. The convo went something like this:

Me: Are they going to total out my car?
Him: Why would they do that? It's a fairly new vehicle. It would take a lot of damage to do that.
Me: Well how much do airbags cost? I heard they are fairly expensive to replace.
Him: Oh, your airbags went off? Just the one? It's only $5000 to replace them.
Me: All of them? Because all FOUR of the side airbags deployed.
Him: Oh.... No, it's $5000 a piece. (LOOOOONG PAUSE) I still don't think it will be totaled.
Me: And the axle is completely bent and the wheel is facing out diagonally.
Him: Hmmm... We're just going to have to wait until tomorrow to see what the estimate says.

So, I don't think he's very happy with me right now. But I'm a little confused about the airbags. If it's $5000 to replace each one, that means that the total of all six airbags in my vehicle is worth more than the vehicle itself. Does that make sense? And seeing as four of them deployed, that is $20 grand in damages. That just doesn't make sense to me.

So now it's just a wait and see. I still haven't decided if it's better that they total the vehicle or just repair it. Guess I'll have to decide how I'm feeling about that when they give me an answer about the damages tomorrow.

I'm glad you aren't a prisoner in your house anymore. It seems more logical for the insurance company to total your car and just get a new one. That's a lot of airbags to fix!

I don't think the airbags are worth $5K -- I think it's just ~$5K apiece to get everything back where it's supposed to be.

I'm not sure if they'll total it or not, since it's so new... But like you said before, it would suck to be driving around a mostly rebuilt car.

Good luck with all that stuff. I hate car insurance stuff in general, ick. It's like going to the dentist or something.
