If anything can go wrong...

I do believe in Murphy's Law. After this weekend, I know that it's true.

We had planned a bonfire for Saturday night so that a) we could finally get rid of the ginormous dead true in front of our house and b) it's just another excuse to have all of our friends over. Who doesn't like a bonfire, games of cornhole, and smores?

To start the day we went over to my friend Slush's house, who is expecting any day now. It was gorgeous outside-why not put the top down on the Jeep? Two minutes later we're driving home from Slush's house, top down, enjoying the sunshine. Oops, we forgot the camp chairs. Let's go back and get them.

The minute we get to her driveway for the second time, the smallest rain cloud in the world hovers over us and it pours! Wow, that's just our luck. So we scramble to put the top back up. We get the chairs, and pull out of her neighborhood where- of course- there is nothing but sunshine. Ugh. Our luck.

We get home and decide to tackle the tree problem. And here's where irony started laughing at us. This tree in our yard was GINORMOUS and very, very dead. We decided it needed to be taken down so that when hurricane season rolls around, it won't fall into our house. Heh- do you already see where this story is going?

We take all the precautions that one does when attempting to cut down a huge tree. We've done it before, why can't we use the same approach?

I won't relive every second of the incident because it just cracks me up every time. But I will tell you that when stupid things like that happen, the world does seem to move in slow motion.

Gorilla and I could not move or speak for at least 5 minutes after the tree crashed into our house. It didn't seem real. I could not believe that a tree really just fell into our house. Was someone filming? Is this Candid Camera? Is Dom DeLuise going to jump out and yell "Smile!"

Surprinsingly we handled the situation very well. What else can you do but laugh? I tried to be optimistic, laugh, and think of the positive aspects. (Despite my pessimistic rants on this blog, I am pretty optimistic in real life) I tried the, "We're so going to laugh about this 10 years from now as we tell our kids the story about that time we made a tree fall into our house!" and "Hey, it could have been much worse. It could have fallen into our living room!"

This situation does make me appreciate our relationship. I don't know how other couples would have handled it, but Gorilla and laughed about it, hugged over it, and worked together to solve the problem. The best part? We still had a bonfire that night. Why let it ruin our weekend?

And our friends had a lot to laugh over that night. Anything that happened the rest of the night paled in comparision however. If someone complained, "My day sucked." or "These bugs are terrible out here." my comeback was and always will be "Yeah, well at least you don't have a tree in your house!"

Although we laughed about the situation, Gorilla didn't want me to take pictures, so I had to sneak a few when he wasn't looking. (He'll thank me later, I know it) So there will be pictures to come.

I'm going to spend the rest of my Monday waiting for the Wiz-ard! (no really, that's his business tagline) roofing guy to appear. I am so hoping he shows up in costume today. That would make this whole situation worth it.

First thought - LT took the top off his Jeep maybe twice in the 9-ish months he spent at Camp Lejeune for that very reason. Stupid NC humidity - I thought random rainshowers were only part of life in a tropical rain forest?

ZOMG... I seriously cannot believe that you guys knocked down a tree and it hit your house. Seriously. NO FUCKING WAY! I will not believe this one til I see the pics. :-p Hopefully the rain holds off until after the roofer is there!!

It's cool that you both laughed about it. LT and I take turns being the flipper-out-er and the one who is annoyed and tries to calm the other one down. We both have a bit of an angry streak when things go wrong. I hope we will learn to laugh like you and the G-man. (when I read "Gorilla" I always just say "G" in my head :))
