I'm not an Oprah fan. Never have been. I know many people will be shocked at that statement. Sorry. I think she gets rich on other people's ideas and generosity, she interrupts people when they speak, and frankly, she pisses me off.
As I was doing the daily email check today that show was on as background noise. (I always have the tv on now-from morning to night because that's what Gorilla always does) But I was distracted from my amazon browsing when I overheard a complete asshole berating his wife on television.
See, as much as I hate Oprah, I have to admit that I do watch some of her shows because they focus on topics and events that you don't get most people to talk about. "That's because I'm OPRAH!" (sorry, I had to throw that Mad TV plug in there) But really it IS because it's Oprah and people will divulge anything to her.
But today's show actually had me in tears. Tears. From watching Oprah.
Because it showed real footage of a man abusing his wife. Not a re-enactment. Not a Lifetime interpretation of what it might look like. Someone actually had real proof that assholes like this do exist. (not that there was ever any question- it's just that most people don't get to witness this heart-wrenching, disgusting show of small-dick syndrome)
The worst part- it was the 13 year old son of the abused woman who was filming. Because his dad asked him to.
How completely SICK and DISGUSTING is that?
And what resonated in my heart (aside from feeling pain for this woman) was how completely, unbelievably, shout-from-the-mountains grateful and lucky I am to have Gorilla. A man who acts like a man. I watched the show, completely amazed that there are men like that, men who have such small dicks and small hearts and small brains and SERIOUS problems to treat their wives and children that way. What causes someone to do that?
The documented abuse started over the wife asking her husband if he wanted lunch. And that led to him beating her and berating her, all whilst his 13 year old son held the video camera. If I asked Gorilla if he wanted lunch, and he said yes, I'd probably flippantly reply with, "So what are you making ME?" This woman lived her life in complete fear, complete self-hate-so much that she was afraid of every move she made and every word she spoke. I can't imagine living life like that. It makes me so sad.
I am no way trying to make light of what I saw, or of situations like this that are occuring as I'm sitting safely in my home, completely and always adored by a wonderful man. It's just that situations like this are so far from my reality that I don't know how to even think about them. It breaks my heart that those children grew up with that. It breaks my heart that a woman can have so little faith in herself, so little confidence, that it takes her that long to get out of a situation like that.
I love Gorilla. (although in light of this post I really should be calling him "Soft Cuddly Sweet Wonderful Loving Teddy Bear") He is a wonderful husband, a wonderful friend, and will be a wonderful father. He treats everyone with respect, and he lives for making me happy. I am so amazingly fortunate that I have a husband like him. And if you are one of the fortunate ones like me, make sure to let your wonderful man know how wonderful he is.
